Tips for simplifying a cross-country move

Moving3Whether you are moving to take up a new job, escape from a failed romance or just for a change of scenery, there are numerous reasons why people decide to up stakes and move across the country; inevitably, there will be a lot of items that these people need to take with them.

Making a long-distance move can be daunting on both the logistical and financial fronts, which makes it all the more important to have a handy hints checklist that you can look at from time to time.  One good tip is simply to get rid of as much stuff as you can.  Items such as DIY shelves that probably would not survive the journey and clothes that have not been worn for at least three years can be disposed of before the move.

Long-distance relocation is a good motivator for having a big clear-out, and you should be a lot pickier in selecting what to keep and what to take with you than if you were simply moving across town.  It might be a good idea to try to sell some of these items on CraigsList or to hold a garage sale, thus ridding yourself of unwanted possessions while simultaneously earning a bit of extra cash to help with the relocation.

A modest cross-country move is estimated to cost around $8,000; however, you can cut costs by packing yourself, hiring professional movers only for the really heavy items, and relocating during the off-season (October through April).
