Tech tricks for moving to a new city

Tech tricksMoving to a new city is a big change and one that would be a great deal more difficult without the use of technology.  From using Craigslist to sell unwanted furniture to charting a cross-country road trip with the aid of Google Maps and booking hotels on the road with the Orbitz app, the reality is that apps and websites make a difficult process a good deal simpler.

The good news is that technology can assist with more than just the move, however.  Technology can also assist with what happens after the move when you need to begin from scratch all over again in terms of finding a new job, new apartment and a new life.

Craigslist is still the most important available resource for those looking to move into an apartment but the information on the site can be made easier to get through thanks to iPhone and Android apps and to the PadMapper’s website.  This website very helpfully lists maps not just from Craigslist but also from Postlets and Padlister, and enables you to filter apartments by location, size and price.  The same is also offered by Lovely, which comes with a beautiful iPhone app and a better user interface.

It is a good idea to sublet at first.  They are short-term, flexible options that let you get to know your city before making any permanent decisions.  If you choose to do so, or if you would like some roommates, use Google Hangouts or Skype to have a face-to-face conversation and vet your options thoroughly.
