Mendes goes back to Bond

It is not only James Bond who will return after the global success of his most recent cinematic outing, Skyfall, but the man who directed him is also going to be making a comeback.  Sam Mendes is returning to helm for the secret agent’s 24th motion picture, despite having previously passed on the project.

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson – the long-time producers of the Bond franchise – and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced yesterday that Daniel Craig will return as 007 in the next movie and that the Oscar-winning Sam Mendes will also be coming back to direct the picture.  Skyfall was a massive hit at the cinemas when released last year, making over $1 billion worldwide in movie tickets and making it seem inevitable that the producers would want Mendes to come back. In March, however, Mendes made the public announcement that he would not be directing the new Bond film because of a busy theater schedule that included a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical and a new production of King Lear.  Now, however, Mendes is back on board. “I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honor all my theater commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24,” Mendes said in a statement yesterday.  “I very much look forward to taking up the reins again and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time.”  The next Bond film is due for release in late 2015.
