Leaving Your Kid at Home in Cali? Do You Know the Rules?

Leaving your Child Home AloneIf you have a child and a job, you’re not alone. Most people in the United States have kids while maintaining their jobs. But, when both parents in a household work, there is often the dilemma of leaving the kids home alone at some point. To avoid this, many people move closer to their families, but others are unable to relocate for a good babysitter.

But, did you know that there are actually laws affecting when parents can leave their kids home alone? We found some of the rules out in California so if you live there now or are planning to move to California, check these out.

  • There is no minimum age at which a child can be left home alone in California. But, the state’s child welfare system will take action on any case of child neglect. So, if you do leave your kids at home when they are too young, you may face criminal charges.
  • There is a different Child Welfare Services agency for every county throughout the state. This agency takes reports of all child abuse and neglects and investigates them.
  • There are two different types of child neglect in California – general and severe. General neglect is the failure to provide adequate clothing, shelter, supervision, or food. Severe neglect involves situations where the child’s health is in danger.

Because California doesn’t have any set laws, it’s a good idea to go by what the child advocacy groups have to say. Most groups suggest the age of 12 to be ideal for a kid to stay home alone. Other factors to consider the maturity of your child – so if you have any doubts moving through your mind, we suggest finding another solution while you work.
