Jason Sudeikis could be new Fletch
It has been a long time since there has been any news on the oft-mooted attempt to reboot the Fletch movies, which proved a hit with Chevy Chase in the lead role back in the 1980s. Many had all but given up on the project ever making it out of development hell; however, it now seems that something could be happening, with rumors that talks are being held with actor Jason Sudeikis to take over the role.
Hollywood has been attempting to find a new actor for the character, who appeared in considerably more novels from author George McDonald than movies, with director Kevin Smith once attached to the project and going through names such as Jason Lee, Zach Braff and even Ben Affleck.
In 2011, however, the rights to the series were picked up by Warner Bros and the studio has had a number of writers attempting to come up with a script for the tentatively titled Fletch Won, with the aim being to reintroduce the character to a modern audience. One of these writers is the representative for the McDonald estate, David List, who would be a producer on any new project, and his draft has apparently not only gone down well with Warner Bros but has also attracted the attention of Sudeikis.
The new movie is reported to be closer in tone to the novels than the Chevy Chase movies, but the actor would still be left with some big shoes to fill. If Sudeikis does indeed sign up, the next step would appear to be to find a director for the project.
