Getting started with your military move
Military relocation can be an overwhelming experience, particularly if you have never experienced it before. The good news is that help is readily available for those who need it. Moves are such a frequent part of life in the military that the Department of Defense has gone out of its way to provide a lot of resources that can guide you through the relocation process.
One good piece of advice is to get in touch with the Relocation Assistance Program office at your current installation. This office will be able to connect you with the right resources and tools to make sure your military move is as smooth and simple as it is can possibly be.
These resources include providing information about the location you will be moving to; details about moving costs, child care, the storage and shipment of household items, housing and spousal employment; counseling relating to financial and stress management and housing; and orientations for newcomers. Other tools provided by the Relocation Assistance Program include welcome packs, lending closets that offer basic household goods while your own may still be in transit, and sponsorship training programs.
It is also important to become aware of the resources that are available to you online. 24-hour assistance with your move is available via websites such as Plan My Move, MilitaryINSTALLATIONS and Military OneSource, which can offer personalized moving support and information and help with planning and tracking the activities related to your relocation.
