Fire Safety Tips for Apartments

Fire Safety Tips for ApartmentsYou don’t want to come home from a night out to be shocked by a huge fire that will force you to relocate, do you?  Unfortunately, that is what could happen to many people throughout the United States if they don’t pay attention to some very basic fire safety tips for apartments.

Today, fires are burning hotter and faster than ever before.  That’s because there are so many plastics in buildings, which means that the poisons and toxins emitted during the fire are even more dangerous than before.  The statistics are scary; according to the USFA more than 4,000 people die and 25,000 are injured in apartment fires each year.

No one wants to move because their apartment has burned down!

Although the fires that break out in apartments aren’t always something that you might cause, you do need to be careful.  Otherwise, you could find yourself having to move to a hotel or a friend’s couch for a period of time.

So, whether you are moving into an apartment or already live in one, keep these fire safety tips in mind:

  • Make sure your smoke detector is working.
  • Always talk to your building manager or landlord about fire safety features.
  • Know where the fire extinguishers are as well as the fire exits.
  • What is your building’s evacuation plan?
  • Become familiar with your building’s layout.
  • Check out your building to make sure there aren’t any fire hazards.
  • Don’t forget to unplug countertop appliances, electric blankets and other devices when not in use.
