Finding a School for Your Kids When You Move
When it comes to moving with your kids, there will always be challenges. Your children may be nervous about relocating, making friends, and their new school. But, you may be nervous about other aspects of moving your kids – such as where they will go to school.
Here are some things you should to help you find a good school for your kids when you move.
Research the School Districts
A little research can go a long way when it comes to finding a school for your kids. The easiest way to start is with the Internet. A good site to use is The Nation’s Report Card, which provided a plethora of information on different schools throughout the United States. The National Center for Education Statistics is also a good resource for families moving out of state.
Tour the School
Setting up some extra time to tour the schools before you move is an excellent way to see how a particular school operates. If possible, take your child on the tour with you. Most schools will be happy to satisfy this request as long as you call ahead. It is always a good idea to book the tour when school is in session.
What to Ask
No two schools are the same, so you will want to take notes about each one. Here are some issues you should ask about:
- Number of classrooms
- Number of students per class
- Available facilities and extracurricular activities
- School curriculum
- School’s approach to education
- Supportive equipment for teachers
