Checklist for a Move

Moving Home ChecklistMoving your home is among the most challenging experiences we will ever face in our lives, involving lots of tasks that need to be completed, lots of tough decisions that need to be made, substantial expense, and a good deal of hard work.  Planning and organization are therefore essential to make any move a success.  Here are some reminders, suggestions and tips for you to peruse at your leisure.

If you are currently renting your home, you will need to give your landlord an appropriate amount of notice about your decision to move in accordance with the tenancy legislation and the lease.  If you are trying to settle the sale of a property while simultaneously buying another, you need to make sure that your lawyer is fully aware of the situation so that they can give you the relevant advice and tell you the steps you need to take to ensure that everything goes according to plan.

It is also a good idea to create an inventory of all your belongings and make decisions about which items you intend to take with you to your new home, what to do with the items you do not wish to take with you – donate, throw away or put into storage – and establish whether there are any items you will leave behind.  The best method to make sure all your possessions get to your new abode is to hire the services of a professional moving company.

It is also possible to pay your moving company to pack up all of your possessions in preparation for the move if you cannot or do not want to do this job yourself.  Letting professionals pack your possessions actually makes a good deal of sense due, as these professionals have both the packing materials and the expertise necessary for ensuring that the job is completed in the correct manner; however, you would be best served by unpacking your own items after the move has been completed, as you know where everything should go and this task can be done at your own pace.  The most important rule of unpacking is to attend to the important things first, such as getting the bathroom and kitchen basics in place, getting the bed set up, and making sure that all perishable goods are put in the fridge.  It is also a good idea to get hold of a floor plan for your new home so that you can determine where items such as large pieces of furniture can go ahead of time and then share this information with your moving company.

It is important not to forget anything, particularly those items that have been hidden away for some time and may well have slipped your mind.  Think about whether you have hidden, lent or put into storage any items that will need to be collected and relocated along with the rest of your items, such as possessions stored in the attic, valuables stored in bank deposit boxes, medical records, wills, and dry cleaning.
