Chatsworth, Los Angeles
Chatsworth is a district in Los Angeles in the state of California. Bordered by the unincorporated Los Angeles County Lands and the Santa Susana Mountains to the north, Winnetka and West Hills Canoga Park to the south, Northridge to the east and Simi Valley, the Simi Hills and Ventura County to the west, the district is located in the northwestern San Fernando Valley. Overlooking the district is the nearby Chatsworth Park.
According to the Los Angeles Almanac, the US Census of 2000 showed that there were 41,255 people living in Chatsworth and 15,668 households, although the Mapping LA project undertaken by the Los Angeles Times three years ago, back in 2009, claimed that the neighborhood of Chatsworth had a population of 33,829, indicating a large relocation away from the area in the past nine years. The average median household income appears to have increased, however, with the 2000 Census showing a figure of $63,817, while the Los Angeles Times report showed a figure of $84,859. 21052 Devonshire Street is the location of the Chatsworth Branch Library, which is run by the Los Angeles Public Library and was rebuilt in a more modern style ten years ago, in 2002.
21606 Devonshire Street, on the other hand, is the location of the Chatsworth Post Office. This was one of the places that were subject to an anthrax threat not long after the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001. The United States Census Bureau operates the Los Angeles Regional Census Center, which is situated in Chatsworth. A major transportation hub for both Chatsworth and West Valley is the Chatsworth Transportation Center and train station. This is served by 20 trains on a daily basis from Ventura to Union Station, located in Downtown Los Angeles on the Metrolink Ventura County Line, as well as the ten trains that are operated daily up and down the state by the Amtrak California Pacific Surfliner. Union Pacific Railroad also makes use of the tracks for freight transport on the Coast Line and was involved in the Chatsworth train collision four years ago, back in 2008. There are also connections offered to a number of Los Angeles, Santa Clarita and Simi Valley bus routes via the Chatsworth Transportation Center, which is situated at 10046 Old Depot Plaza Road, between Lassen and Devonshire streets.
Those who live in and move to Chatsworth are served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Lawrence Middle School, Superior Street Elementary, Chatsworth Park Elementary School, Chatsworth High School and Germain Street Elementary are all situated in Chatsworth. The district also has a number of private schools, such as Sierra Canyon, Chaminade College Preparatory Middle School, St Judes Eudes Elementary and Middle School, and Chatsworth Hills Academy.
Chatsworth has a number of connections to the entertainment industry that go back to the 1960s, with many rural and western movies and TV shows filmed there. In recent times, it was the home for the popular 24 television series starring Kiefer Sutherland.
