Best Long-Term Storage Tips for Washer and Dryers

Long-term storage is a fantastic choice when you need to place your belongings somewhere for a while due to time between moving, moving overseas, or renting out your old place. Whatever your reason for requiring long-term storage, you will want to prepare your washer and dryer properly. Without the right preparation, long-term storage has the potential to destroy your appliances. Bekins Moving Solutions has helped countless customers in long-term storage preparation. Here are a few ways in which you can prevent damage to your washer and dryer before putting them in long-term storage.

Prepare Your Washer and Dryer

To ensure that your washer and dryer aren’t damaged in long-term storage, be sure to empty all water, detergent, and lint from your washer and dryer. If you don’t rid the appliances of all moisture, you risk degradation of your machines’ hoses and even rust in the drum, which can render your entire machine useless. Read your manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that these substances are completely removed from the washer and dryer. Different brands may have a different process for completely emptying the system. You may even want to run your system a few times without soap to clear out any detergent residue. After you have drained the water out, leave the doors to your washer and dryer open for at least 24 hours so that the remaining bit of moisture can evaporate.

Pack Your Washer and Dryer Correctly

Packing your washer and dryer for storage is pretty straightforward. Close all doors so they cannot become damaged during transport. If you can remove the power cords, make sure to wrap them up and secure them with packing tape. Place them inside a freezer bag and tape them inside of the washer or dryer, so they do not become lost. If you have the manual, it may be helpful to place that inside as well before you tape the doors shut. Most manufacturers have their manuals available for free online in case you don’t have it handy.

Choose the Right Storage Facility

To prevent moisture and additional temperature changes from impacting your washer or dryer, choose a storage facility that has temperature control.
