Sweetest Day is celebrated every year on the third Saturday in the month of October. The day is intended to be dedicated entirely to your “sweetie”, existing as a chance for you to recognize the person who is most special and sweetest to you, regardless of how they are actually related to you or who they are.
To get a little bit of recognition, they just need to be “sweet”. Sweetest Day was started by Herbert Birch Kingston, a candy company employee and philanthropist from Cleveland, Ohio. Kingston wanted to be able to bring happiness to the likes of shut-ins, the underprivileged and orphans, with the intention of showing these people that they had not been forgotten. He began the holiday by giving away small gifts and candy back in 1922. Kingston sometimes made use of movie stars in order to distribute the gifts, with actress Ann Pennington being the first such celebrity to take part on the first Sweetest Day, presenting 2200 newspaper boys in Cleveland with candy boxes in order to show gratitude for their service to the general public. It did not take long before the holiday began to become very popular all over the United States after initially only being celebrated in the Northeast and the Great Lakes region. In the 21st century Sweetest Day is celebrated with our friends and loved ones, though it is a very good idea to follow the original intention of the holiday and come up with methods to give small gifts and candy to those in need.
