Preparing Mentally to Move Out of State

People move out of state for many different reasons. Sometimes it is for a new job, moving closer to family, or just a change of scenery. Relocating to another state can be mentally refreshing, exciting, and give you the chance to start anew. However, a move can be stressful and requires a bit of mental preparation.  So, before you actually pack it up and move, consider these issues.

Why Do You Want to Move?

Before you make a big move out of state, think about your motivations for relocating.  A move should be a calculated and planned event, not a quick escape. If you feel like the place your currently live is lacking, determine if you have exhausted local resources before taking a big chance on another location. Remember, there can be a downside to living in just about any place.

Who Are You Uprooting?

If you are just moving yourself, it is easier to uproot and set up at a new location. However, if you have children and a spouse, you do need to consider their feelings about relocating.  If you have the desire to relocate, open it up to a family discussion. An impromptu move will have a large emotional impact on everyone in your family. They should have an opportunity to throw in their two cents. Listen to everyone’s thoughts and feelings and take them into consideration when making your final decision.

What Are Your Expectations?

As you consider relocating to a different state, think about your expectations for your new location. For example, how long will you give yourself to adjust to the new city? What are some aspects about a location that are deal breakers? What are some characteristics about the new location that you need to live there? Spend some time prioritizing your expectations about your new location.

Are Your Reasons Good Enough?

Are you moving for the right reasons? You just don’t want to pack up and move at the drop of the hat for no reason. That is a recipe for moving disaster. Some examples of a good reason to move to a new state might include:

  • A new job
  • Attending a new school
  • To live more affordably

These are just a handful of the most common reasons people move out of state. However, it is important to remember that there are just as many poor reasons to move. Just remember to think it through thoroughly first!

Do Your Research

Once you’ve decided to move out of state, you will need to do your homework. First of all, you need to make sure that you will like your new city.  Learn as much as possible about the new location. The Internet is a great source of information. Look at local websites for apartment complexes, housing developments, and Craigslist to get an idea regarding housing prices, apartment renting costs, and the cost of living in the area. If you can, speak to people that already live in the area for personal opinions and information.
