Mistakes to Avoid with Your PCS Move

As a military family, you are no stranger to the moving process. Military personnel are lucky to spend a full year at one single location. Bekins Moving Solutions has helped countless military families with their moves and as such, we have worked out all the kinks. Each move is a learning experience, and we are happy to share with you the common mistakes we see during a PCS move so you can avoid them. Your family has enough to worry about without having to deal with the frustration of relocating. Here are a few mistakes you should avoid with your PCS move.

PCS Fund

While money can be tight when you have a spouse in the military, try to put together a PCS fund. With some money stashed away, you won’t have to rely on credit cards when it comes time to move. The amount can vary, but military resources suggest that anything between $1,000 and $3,000 should be sufficient, depending upon how many people are moving. If you have a relatively large family, you will want to aim at the higher end. If you are single, you can PCS much more cheaply.

Wait Before Purchasing a Home

Don’t make the mistake of buying a new home too quickly. If you aren’t familiar with the area, you will want to rent first to get a sense of your new city. You may need a year or so to scope out the perfect location. If your new military home is not going to be on base, then you will want to do some research about the area before diving into purchasing a new home.

Keep Your PCS Move Organized

While it may be tempting to throw everything into the nearest box and load it up onto the truck, this is a huge mistake. You will end up in your new home with zero indication of where your items are located. You will need to keep important items and documents handy just in case you need them during your move. So many people fall into the trap of not keeping their paperwork and receipts, which could cost them money in the long term. Some of your moving expenses may be tax-deductible. However, you won’t be able to utilize them without the receipts to back up your claim.
