Military Moving Advice

Military Moving Advice

If you have a military move coming up in the not too distant future, you may be a bit excited and a tad stressed. The good news is that there are plenty of tips and a number of excellent resources that can help you to get through the experience with the minimum amount of fuss. Bekins Moving Solutions is happy to provide the following advice for help with your next change of duty station.

Take Inventory of Your Items

Two months before your next military move, you should make a video inventory of your household goods. Make sure to include the contents of boxes and drawers. Take pictures of any existing damage to your current furniture and other belongings.

Get a Weight Estimate

The military has certain weight limits that you must abide by, especially if you are moving overseas. Before your move, you should make a household weight estimate that incorporates special packing items. List any other goods that are particularly unusual or heavy. If you have questions about weight limits or reimbursement, you will want to speak with your transportation office on base.

Schedule Your Move

You should schedule your move with the transportation office. Make sure that you know your departure and arrival dates. Also, ensure that you have at least six copies of your military moving orders.

Tie Up Loose Ends

If you live off base, inform your property manager of your intent to leave the premises. Start getting copies of your medical records, including ophthalmological and dental. If necessary, arrange temporary quarters at your new location. Get in touch with the housing office at the location you will be moving to find out whether there is a waiting list for housing. If there is, you will want to get on the list as soon as possible.

Keep in Contact

When the move is actually underway, it is important to maintain contact with the JPPSO (joint personal property shipping office). When you get to your new location, follow up your contact with the housing office to find out when housing will be available for you. This will minimize any delays in getting settled in your new location.

One of the keys to a smooth military transition is hiring a moving company who is familiar with military families.
