One of the elephants in the room with regard to the phenomenally popular Harry Potter book and movie series was the status of the romantic relationships between several of the lead characters when the series came to an end. The pairings of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley and Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger were popular with some fans, but many others – particularly those who saw the real depth of the relationship between Harry and Hermione – were left deeply disappointed.
Now, seven years after the last book and three years after the final movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows author JK Rowling has sent fans into a tailspin by admitting that the relationship between Hermione and Ron was a mistake and that Hermione should instead have ended up with Harry.
The stunning admission was made by Rowling in an interview with Hermione herself – actress Emma Watson – for a magazine and has been widely circulated in the press. “For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron,” Rowling confessed. “It was a choice I made for very personal reasons – not for reasons of credibility.”
Rowling’s confession is a total flip from a 2006 interview to coincide with the publication of the sixth book. Rowling offended many Harry/Hermione supporters by calling them “delusional”. In recent times her statements have become more ambiguous, but no one expected her to come clean about making such a huge mistake.
